On Indra's recommendation, Rama decides to propriate Ma Durga. He requests Hanuman to go off to Gandharvamadhan parvat to fetch 1000 lotuses to be offered. The vanaras and Lakshman make appropriate preparations, and then Rama starts the puja, reciting Chandi-paTh and singing Durga stuti. After Hanuman returns with the flowers, Rama prepares to offer them, when he notices one flower missing. In order to make up the shortfall, he prepares to offer his eye. But just as he is about to, Ma Durga appears before him and blesses him. Note: this is the main story behind Durga puja, and why it is held at the time co-inciding with Dushera.
